Program Details

Selection Process

The Piramal Foundation works with its Partner Organizations around India to review applications and select candidates who demonstrate a commitment to the values of the Fellowship as well as the skills necessary to execute the job functions of each opportunity.  Selection of an individual applicant constitutes an assurance that the applicant meets the minimum standards for the program; is prepared to work in a dynamic, start- up environment; will adapt to the culture of their job site and community; and will derive benefits from the program.

The Piramal Foundation encourages individuals to apply as early as possible as applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.  However, final decisions for each position will not be made until after the application deadline.  The Piramal Foundation reserves the right to reject an applicant for any reason. Selection for the Piramal Fellowship is a competitive process and therefore, it is advisable for applicants to apply for more than one job role on the condition of genuine interest.  The Piramal Fellowshp will create a waitlist of applicants if necessary.  Incomplete applications will not be considered. In waitlist situations, applicants will be informed of timelines regarding notification.  The Piramal Foundation does not discriminate on the basis of race, sex, sexual orientation, religion, age, marital status, national and ethnic origin, or disability.

Applicants may not defer acceptance to the Piramal Fellowship as they are evaluated based on both their fit for both the Fellowship and specific opportunities to which they have applied for in conjunction.  As opportunities change from year to year, it is impossible for the program to defer acceptance.

Applicants must confirm their acceptance into the Piramal Fellowship for Sustainable Business within ten days of their notification.

Applicants are evaluated by BOTH the Piramal Fellowship team and each Partner Organization to which he/she has applied.  However, The Piramal Fellowship reserves the right to make the final decision on each applicant.

Late Arrival to Orientation

Piramal Fellows are required to be present from the first day of the program orientation.  In extremely rare cases, there may be valid reasons for a Fellow to arrive late. Permission for such arrangements can only be granted by the Executive Director of the Piramal Fellowship.

Early Departure

As part of our community philosophy, it is important that all fellows start and complete the program together.  All Fellows are required to remain at their Partner Organizations until the final program date and to complete and turn in all Fellowship related documentation prior to departing the site.

Any Fellow who leaves prior to the end of the program without permission from the Executive Director, or who fails to complete and turn in all required Fellowship work, will not have completed the fellowship program.

In rare cases:  Fellows must get prior permission of both their Partner Organization and the Executive Director of the Piramal Fellowship for permission to leave a program early. There are few circumstances that may warrant approval of a Fellow's early departure or withdrawal from a program: a serious accident or illness, a severe psychological problem, or a severe family problem. Fellows who may be in such a situation should inform both the Partner Organization and the Piramal Fellowship staff as soon as this becomes a possibility. These cases will be evaluated jointly by all parties involved.

Termination

The Piramal Foundation reserves the right to withdraw the Piramal Fellow from the project and to terminate the working partnership with Partner Organization at any time. The Piramal Foundation may terminate a Fellow for violation of the Piramal Fellowship handbook and/or ethos and is not responsible for financial losses sustained by the Fellow.

The Partner Organization may also terminate its working relationship with the Piramal Foundation and/or a particular Fellow under reasonable circumstances and with due notice.  In this case the Piramal Fellowship will do its best to find a new position for the Fellow to carry-out the remainder of his/her Fellowship.

Financial Assistance

For the costs of making this program possible, we aim to develop a three-way partnership between the Piramal Foundation, the Partner Organization, and the Piramal Fellow. The Piramal Fellow is responsible for his/her own travel to and from India and for his/her own health insurance; the Piramal Foundation provides travel, orientation and workshops, curriculum costs, and management costs related to the Piramal Fellowship within India; the Partner Organization is responsible for paying each Piramal Fellow a minimum monthly stipend of Rs. 25,000.  The fellow is responsible for personal expenses, including room/board and basic amenities.  The Partner Organization will be responsible for covering company related travel expenses for the Piramal Fellow(s) working with the Partner Organization.

Logistics

Housing - The Fellows is responsible for the costs of housing.  The Partner Organization will assist in finding reasonable and safe accommodations for the Piramal Fellow if requested.  If necessary, the Partner Organization will make temporary living arrangements for the first month of the Fellowship until more permanent accommodations are found.  Ultimately, the Fellow is responsible for finding and securing housing for the duration of the Fellowship program.

Orientation - In order to best prepare the Piramal Fellows, the Piramal Foundation provides a mandatory ten day orientation program at the beginning of the Fellowship year.  Orientation includes: academic readings (concerning various issues relevant to India and social enterprise), speakers on topics related to social enterprise, team building activities and practical development field exercises to properly prepare the Fellows for living in India and their projects. Field exercises include village surveys and visits to social enterprises in the Hyderabad area.

Workshops - Piramal Fellows are required attend three to four day workshops up to four times over the course of the program.  The Piramal Foundation will organize and pay all costs associated with the orientation and workshops.  The purpose of these workshops is to provide ongoing leadership training, a support structure, an opportunity to learn more about social enterprises and a space for Fellows to share best practices.

The Piramal Foundation's Relationship with Fellows

The Piramal Foundation aims to make the Fellowship a distinctive journey in leadership and social impact.   The Foundation provides additional support through orientation, regular written interaction, mentorship, workshops, and encouraging excellence in leadership. The Piramal Foundation will track the progress of the Fellow(s) through monthly phone calls, e-mail, and/or postal mail.  The Piramal Foundation also requires Fellows to submit periodic documentation, a case study, and a Fellowship Summary Report.  A Piramal Foundation representative may visit the Fellow and the Partner Organization during the course of the Fellowship to further nurture the spirit of excellence, ensure quality, and manage expectations.

Throughout the program period, the Piramal Foundation and the Partner Organization will jointly evaluate the Fellow(s), progress, and creatively work together to solve any issues or challenges that may have arisen.

Drug and Alcohol Violations

Alcohol Policy
Piramal Fellows are subject to the laws of the state in which they are operating as well as any policies and regulations of their Partner Organization. Note that each state in India has its own laws regarding the consumption of alcohol.  Fellows should take care to know these laws if they are traveling across state boundaries.

Alcohol abuse by Piramal Fellows is viewed by the Piramal Foundation as a serious violation of the terms of participation and will be subjected to a zero tolerance policy.  Consumption of alcohol that leads to the following is considered to be alcohol abuse:
